School Introduction
Xiamen University (XMU), established in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is the first Chinese university founded by an overseas Chinese. The University is a comprehensive institution of higher education directly affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education, and it is chosen for inclusion in the Chinese Government’s Program of Building World-Class Universities and World-Class Disciplines. Garden-like campuses
XMU campuses are situated around the Xiamen Bay on the western coast of the Taiwan Strait, with breathtaking views of undulating green hills and vast expanses of seawaters. They rank among the world’s most beautiful campuses. Located on the southern tip of Xiamen Island, the Siming campus lies in close proximity to several places of interest and is adjacent to a sandy beach. Its Xiang’an Campus is situated in Xiamen’s Xiang’an District, bounded by the Xiangshan Scenic Area on the north and the sea on the south. XMU campuses are landscaped as beautiful gardens, with serene lakes, lush foliage and magnificent buildings of Kah Kee architectural styles.
Highly professional faculty and well-established disciplines
XMU sustains its status as a pre-eminent center of learning through continuous human resources development. The University has recruited a large number of top-notch professors, many of whom are prominent scientists and leading scholars. XMU currently has a faculty of 2,657, of whom 81.1% hold doctoral degrees. XMU affords high priority to the diversification and internationalization of the mix of its faculty. Affordable study expenses
The tuition fee and cost of living at XMU are relatively low compared with most of the other major universities in China and beyond. A good variety of scholarships are available to international students, including Chinese Government Scholarships, Confucius Institute Scholarships, Confucius China Study Plan Scholarships, Fujian Provincial Government Scholarships, Xiamen Tan Kah Kee Scholarships and Xiamen University Scholarships. Full scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, living allowance, healthcare and insurance costs, while partial scholarships cover one or several items under full scholarships.
First-class facilities
XMU boast a comprehensive range of teaching and research facilities and an efficient public service system. The University’s library holds a collection of over 4.1 million paper books and 4.9 million e-books. Furthermore, the University’s high-speed information network is among the most sophisticated in China. International exchange and cooperation
XMU is becoming increasingly internationalized and is actively engaged in multilateral and global cooperation. Program DescriptionProgram Description The programme aims to help international students to become qualified for medical professionals through 6-year training in medical school and hospitals. XMU launched the MBBS programme in 2006 and the number of graduates who have passed the Indian Medical License Examination comes first among comparable Chinese universities. Medical College Xiamen University conducted the MBBS program in 2006, nearly 30% of the first batch of international students passed the screening test held by the medical council of their motherland at the first attempt. Medical College of Xiamen University consists of teaching organizations - basic medical department, clinical medical department, preventive medical department, Chinese medical department, pharmaceutical department and nursing department; scientific research organizations of biomedical engineering research center, anticancer research center, basic medical experimental and teaching center, Chinese Medicine research center of Xiamen University etc; five grade three plus affiliated hospitals, including Affiliated Sun Yat-sen Hospital, Affiliated Southeast Hospital, Affiliated Xiamen Ophthalmic Hospital etc; five teaching hospitals, including Xiamen 1st Hospital, Xiamen 2nd Hospital, Xiamen Chinese Medical Hospital, Xiamen Xianyue Hospital and Xiamen Maternity and Child Health Hospital; four teaching bases, including Xiamen Disease Prevention and Control Center, Xiamen Hygiene Supervision Institute, Xiamen Drug Examination Institute and Xiamen Starshark Drug Company. On-campus accommodation
Freshmen and sophomores have classes on the Zhangzhou Campus, so have to live on that campus. Juniors and senior students study on the Xiamen Main Campus and are free to choose to live either in a dormitory for overseas students or off campus.
General advanced students, Senior advanced students, Language students and Short-term students live in the overseas student apartments on the Xiamen Main Campus. Living in a school dorm makes it easier to take full advantage of the University's facilities and to interact with both Chinese students and overseas students from other countries.
Zhangzhou Campus
The student accommodation on the Zhangzhou Campus provides excellent living facilities. Security is provided by an intelligent swipe-card entry system, providing management within closed areas each equipped with bathing and laundry facilities.
This security system, benefits the students in terms of both living and studying, is in the process of being implemented in dormitories on the Xiamen Main Campus.
Students can choose to live in single rooms, double rooms or four-person rooms. The accommodation fee is around 4800 RMB per year.
Xiamen Main Campus
The overseas student apartments on the Xiamen Main Campus, the Nanguang Building and the Cai Qingjie Building, are set in picturesque surroundings and enjoy sea views and fresh sea air. The buildings are well-equipped with modern facilities, including telephones, air-conditioning, cable TV, Internet access points
and separate toilets. The Overseas Student Service Centre runs excellent services including dining rooms, coffee bars, and shops providing for daily necessities.

The overseas student apartments in Xiamen Campus are set in picturesque surroundings and enjoy sea views and fresh sea air. The buildings are fully-equipped with modern facilities, including telephones, air-conditioning, cable TV, Internet access points and separate bathrooms.
Living expenses: about 500RMB/month
Off-campus accommodation
Many overseas students wish to live off-campus once they become more familiar with the environment in Xiamen. Living off-campus makes it easier to meet and establish relations with local residents, thereby enhancing your understanding of Chinese culture and customs, and improving your Chinese.
Living off-campus in Xiamen is cheap, with the monthly rent for a spacious and comfortable flat of about RMB 1,200. Such accommodation can provide a quieter environment for study. Living off-campus in shared accommodation with classmates is both safer and helps reduce the risk of loneliness.
The Overseas Education College staff will help with the necessary formalities for living off-campus. They will advise you of the documents you will need to provide including a letter of consent from your parents.
